Does anyone remember this chick? Months ago I dreamed that I did a webcomic and she was in it. It had two grown-up magical girls fighting a colossal dragon beast living beneath the city that ate people living below the poverty line.

A friend of mine covered this yesterday with a couple other Bard kids. It was followed by two young women singing a soft RnB original vocal duet called “Fuck you, you ho” (a real crowd pleaser). They were in turn followed by his old chip-tune band, now called “Throw Baby.”

It happens that my current circle of friends consists entirely of cis-folks (unless someone isn’t telling me something). Considering I treat my friendships like clotheslines on which to air my grievances, I often find myself wondering, what response to I expect when I complain about my gender shit?

Thankfully, no one tries to give me advice (except for my mom. Mom, if you’re reading this, please stop giving me advice/critiquing my gender, I know you want to help, but you can’t). The most common reaction is just to listen, pause thoughtfully, and return to the original subject of conversation, which sounds worse than it actually is. I know they just aren’t prepared to respond to it, so they’re storing the information; I feel like what I’ve just said is meaningless to them. At the same time, people acting like they *~totally get it~* is irritating. It seems in-genuine, like they’re trying to impress me. Asking questions in response is also a mixed bag, because I don’t always have answers, and I feel like I should. That isn’t their fault, I need to get used to saying, “I don’t know yet.”

It’s not a one sided problem. I’m nonchalant to a fault, so sometimes I say things that I consider rather emotional confessions, which come off as simple facts about Geo. It’s also complicated because the Trans* dialogue on gender (seems to me like it) is dominated by people who are seeking transition, when I’m not (yet?). There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s an incredibly important issue. But it means that what information people do have is not necessarily applicable to me.

I guess the ideal response is, don’t give advice, ask clarifying questions but respect the bounds of the information offered, don’t try to overwrite my conclusion but do respond. There’s nothing wrong with saying, “I don’t completely understand, but it’s good to know.” Actually, that would be perfect.

I asked my literature teacher today if I could turn my final essay into an illustration project, for the billionth time, and she said no for the billionth time. What irritated me about it wasn’t the denial, but that she said she wanted me to do some more “critical analysis.”

Illustration has no critical analysis? That is some diarrheic, o-zone frying, gag-reflex-inducing bullshit.

I’m not so good at smart reading. When I’m reading a book, there are only two critical pathways in my brain: ‘how does this text reinforce or deconstruct the cissexist heteronorms of my society?’; and ‘how do I draw this shit?’ This is why my essays have gotten really terrible. I don’t really care about unpacking metaphors about, like, whether Caesar was a good dude or not. I just want to draw his face and find some homoerotic subtext.

The thing is, rendering a character from literature isn’t just a matter of tracking down all of hir physical characteristics mentioned in the text (which is harder than it sounds). If it was, I’d be drawing stick figures. What I have to do is untangle the author’s idea of the character, how ze wants the character to feel in the readers mind. Then I have to somehow render that feeling. Every aspect of the drawing has to reveal something about the text, about the character’s baring, history, destiny. If I succeed, you can see a character’s beginning and end in hir face.

Half of the intellectual process is the same. I still have to dig through the text and ponder, link passage to passage, do some close reading, god forbid. But instead of turning it into my paper, I create an illustration of the book. I subordinate my intent to the author’s intent. The ego is obliterated. The end product edifies, expands the text. Makes the experience of it deeper, richer. It is a gift to the author and to the reader, perhaps shabby and inadequate, but heartfelt.

The fact is, I can’t write an essay that will deepen your experience of Lawrence Durell’s Alexandria Quartet. That’s why I don’t try. What good does it do me? And what good does it do you, oh teacher of mine? If you really wanted to evaluate my understanding of the book, you’d let me draw it for you. And yes, I respect this is a lit class, so I’d go through and unpack the quotes and explain why I gave Justine a butt-chin. I’d do such a good project. I’d print out my illustrations at the color printer in the art building, and you could hang them up above your desk and smile at how your class inspired a budding artist. I’d work harder because I cared. But no, apparently you’d read another half-assed paper with no real thesis that I wrote at the last minute.

Your loss, I guess.

I’ve completely catastrophized my cybergraphics assignment, convincing myself not only that success (finishing it on time) is impossible, but that my inevitable failure to complete this project portends my inevitable failure at art school and at any creative career thereafter. Because having difficulty with a difficult assignment for a difficult teacher after a difficult semester is inexcusable.

Fortunately, my pensive warmup has cleared my mind, and I am now emotionally prepared to sit on my ass and stare at a computer screen for six hors.
